Should I Prepare Before A Therapy Session?

Good therapy is expensive.

You want to get your money’s worth.

So it’s reasonable to wonder how best to prepare for each session.

Spending time with a journal can be excellent preparation.

Set aside 20 minutes or more, and imagine you’re in session.

Instead of speaking, write.

Then imagine what your therapist would say in response, and write that down too.

This builds your ability to internalize your therapist, which is invaluable.

The one downside of preparing for sessions is that it might be a way to manage the anxiety of the unknown.

Sometimes the magic happens when we both don’t know what to say.

Like dreams, which always provide a surprise to the conscious mind, the important insight is one you couldn’t predict beforehand.

It could be that your fear of “wasting time,” is the main issue.

So journal, but then enter the session like a newborn.
