How long does therapy last?

If you google, “how long should I be in therapy,” you may see something like:

How do I know when to stop therapy?

Here are a few reasons why you might consider breaking up with your therapist:

  • You've seen consistent growth and progress to the point of not having much to talk about in sessions.

  • You feel like you've accomplished what you came to therapy for.

  • You feel like you've developed the tools you need to cope.

But life isn’t just about coping and the reason that brings you into the therapy is likely only what you’re conscious about. Not having much to talk about is often a sign of not feeling comfortable talking about something.

Here are two better questions:

How do you know when you should leave the therapist you’re with? (and seek another)

How long do you want to be in a process of meaning, growth and self-actualization?
