What is Depth Psychology?

Do you feel like your work with patients is just on the surface?

How do you go deeper?

Depth Pschology is about studying the unconscious mind and its relationship to consciousness.

Most people don’t think too much about their unconscious.

They’d prefer to talk about whatever is “on their mind,” meaning what they’re consciously aware of.

In this capacity, you may fall into the role of a friend who is a good listener and perhaps has some familiarity with ways of thinking that are generally more or less effective.

Depth psychology is much less concerned with what’s “on the mind’ of the patient and more interested in what is not entering awareness.

What is the patient not saying?

What’s revealed by their body language?

What are their dreams saying?

Where’s the incongruence between the content of their words and their tone?

How are they affecting you as they speak?

Do you feel trapped? Controlled? Bored?

Are they telling you a story wanting sympathy and you find yourself agreeing with the persecutor?

These questions are the beginning of working on a deeper level.

My invitation to you is to swim together.
